SONSHINE PHILIPPINES MOVEMENT CELEBRATES SUCCESS IN THE NATION’S LARGEST VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DRIVE
The annual Sonshine Philippines Movement Clean Up Drive is the premier volunteer event focused in cleaning our environment.
Recently, thousands of volunteers from different regions of the Philippines worked together with the community.
In Pang
asinan, SPM worked on a deserted building which has become a dumping site for a decade. Layers of algae have developed due to the stagnant water causing unpleasant smell. With SPM’s initiative, the ten-year-old dirt and garbage were removed; the volunteers pulled out tons of garbage and washed off the area.
On the other hand, SPM volunteers of Marbel, South Cotabato, cleaned up a market making it one of the cleanest markets in the area.
Knowing this area filled with filthy substances, garbage ranging from the goods rejects meats, and other trash, plus the stinky smell. Without any hesitation, volunteers flocked at Public Market of Koronadal, South Cotabato with their cleaning materials on hand.
Volunteers of Bicol and General Santos City in Southern Mindanao organized a cleanup drive at the nearby school campus.
Meanwhile, SPM Batangas and Isulan, Sultan Kudarat had a community street clean up drive. Together, they worked on the litter, weeds, cigarette butts, debris lining on the streets and filled every single trash bag.
The water ways and the park of Isulan were also cleaned up. Many residents thanked the SPM and were inspired by what SPM volunteers have done right after their municipal park was freed from garbage.
In Western Mindanao, volunteers together with the residents also spent hours cleaning out the water ways.
Same thing happened in Western Visayas, particularly in Brgy. Banago, Bacolod City— Local residents wanted to clean out the build from rubbish causing foul smell and illnesses. But the lack of will power to resolve the filthiness discouraged them.
With this situation, the Sonshine Philippines Movement has been very helpful in clearing up the area, when everyone united to collect the floating garbage from the mouth of the sea, to the coast and its adjacent areas.
Sacks of garbage were collected and the seawater again showed its beauty and purity
In Davao City, SPM volunteers brushed every nook and cranny of the Peoples Park.
As early as 8 o’clock, volunteers, with their cleaning tools were set to get on the floor and washed up the park.
The 911 Auxiliary Fire Brigade has provided water for the initiative, following its successful joint operation in the previous clean up drive.
SPM saturated all corners of the four hectare area, even the mythical sculptures did not escape the cleaning aid of the volunteers.
At the end of the day, the place looked cleaner than before, making the park a place to inhale fresh air and spotless playground for children.
Once again, the light of goodness shines, as SPM volunteers courageously dig into the problem of waste management. Tons of trash was collected from the streets, markets, schools, beaches and waterways.
The collaborative effort of the people and SPM volunteers has created an impact on the society, showing to everyone that with unity and care for the environment, even the dirtiest areas can turn into the cleanest places in the community.
